History of Inner Wheel District 323

In the year 1985 Inner Wheel District 320 which consisted of clubs in the states of Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala was bifurcated into District 320 and District 323. The newly formed District 323 had around 35 clubs existing in various parts of Tamil Nadu and Mrs. Kalaimagal Swaminathan was the First Chairman.

In 1995 the District was bifurcated once again into Districts 298 and District 323. Presently, the District consists of 46 Clubs with 1400 members in the city of Chennai and Revenue Districts of Kancheepuram, Thiruvannamalai, Thiruvallur and Vellore.

Inner Wheel Club of Madras South, the first club to be formed in South India in the year 1963 belongs to IIW District 323, thus giving District 323 the distinction of being the District where the Inner Wheel Movement was started in South India.

District 323 members have occupied highest Offices in the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in India.

Mrs. Kamala Ramakrishnan was the Association President in the year 2000 -2001.

The 9th Triennial Conference of the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in India was hosted by Inner Wheel District 323 in Chennai during her tenure. She later held the post of IIW Editor in the year 2005-06. She was International Inner Wheel President for the year 2007 -08. She is the third Indian to occupy the highest global office in the Inner Wheel Movement.

Mrs. Azhagu Annamalai was the 5th Association President from District 323 in 2008-2009. She has also held the post of Association Treasurer in 2005 -06. She will be International Inner Wheel Treasurer in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Mrs. Mano Bakthavatsalam, a recipient of the Margaret Golding Award was the first Association Secretary of the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in India. She became the first member from District 323 to become Association President in the year 1984 – 85.

Mrs. Nirmala Desikan, was the Association Secretary in the year 1987-88 and Mrs. Rama Rajagopalan was the Association Secretary in the year 1999-2000. Mrs. Kala Bashyam was Deputy National Representative in the year 1997-98.

Late Mrs. Suman Karpurwas Association President in 1986-87 and late Mrs. Leela Ratnam was Association President in 1993-94.

Mrs. Latha Mahalingam was the National Editor in the year 2016-17.

The District continues to produce leaders who are destined to hold prestigious posts in this organization. In 2017-18 District 323 is represented by Mrs. Azhagu Annamalai as the IIW Treasurer.

The 30 Past District Chairmen hold a place of pride in the District. The District depends on their knowledge and wisdom to this day as it considers them its' friends , philosophers and guides. As the founding pillars of District 323, they play a vital role in upholding the values and principles of this prestigious movement and serve as propellants to push further and reach for the star.
